Health Care Reform Bill

11 years in this chair has brought on a few more health problems, it is nice to be able to see a doctor more then once every 5 years. Plenty of times I paid out of my pocket $1500 or more in a month to cover medical supplies. Why does it cost so much? I found the word Medical to be one of the most expensive words. I can take a stick of gum & put the word medical in front of the name and it will go up in price 500%. Now why would someone spend so much money on medical? Well, when I got paralyzed I found out that either you get the Medical supplies or you DIE.
If you have a disability & have tried to get health insurance on your own it flat out SUCKS. Most insurance companies would not cover me and the one I found that would cost $1550 a month. After a few questions I found out $1550 a month would cover NOTHING. I didn't go to the doctor for 5 years so why did it cost so much & why would I pay for something that covered NOTHING? I didn't pay & I didn't have insurance for 3 years.
Freedom: To me this bill will give people a chance to become more productive members of our society. I have past on a few jobs & opportunities because of the fear of not having or losing my health insurance. It's not a great feeling to know that one is uninsurable. The fact is life changing disabilities do happen everyday & they can happen to anyone! I look forward to not having the challenge of being uninsurable & when its all just a thing of the past.

A Robin Hood bill that America needed
AS OF yesterday, America had the most screwed-up health-insurance system in the developed world. As of today, America probably still has the most screwed-up health-insurance system in the developed world, but it's significantly less screwed-up than it was yesterday... Read More

Robert has changed my life and made me a better person and that is why I support this bill ! I've seen the struggles he's faced at work, at home, out having fun; he's only human and deserve the same healthcare as anyone else! For those who do not support this bill I'd challenge you to find someone like Robert and get to know them. After you do, and you care about that person, see them get sick and told they can't get medical care or the medication they need becuase they can't afford it! If you have a heart at all you will not be able to watch that happen and you'll look at this bill very different! You'll learn that it's necessary to keep amazing people like Robert alive and healthy! He DESERVES this just like anyone else!
As a registered nurse, educator, health care reform advocate and above all- a friend of Robert, I am proud that he posted his experience with medical health care on his site.
The American way of life is synonymous with life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We pride ourselves as being the land of opportunities and progress. Unfortunately in our health care system we have lost this vision and perpetuated a monopoly riddled with inequities and discrimination. The people that suffer the most are those that refuse to succumb to a defeatist mentality, the working uninsured or people who desire to work with chronic, dehabilitating medical or mental health conditions or illnesses.
The Medicaid, or public subsidy system, was devised for people with chronic and dehabilitating illnesses and conditions to support living expenses and provide medical coverage. Unfortunately, stipulations are in place that do not allow people to possess personal wealth beyond a menial amount of money in investments, savings and possessions (such as a home in some cases) and still provide for medical coverage. As a result, people have to sacrifice working and making an income to remain in this lower income bracket. It is well supported in research and in the literature that working provides much more that mere income to a person's quality of life. It provides self-esteem, structure, sense of identity and life purpose.
In our current health care system, the decision to work often comes with detrimental consequences for many Americans. Working with a medical or mental health illness or condition may result in forfeiting your Medicaid benefits. The result is the ultimate gamble of living a life with no health insurance at all. Worse case scenarios could result in seeking health care services and incurring ridiculously inflated medical bills and crippling debt.
The Bill passed by Congress hopes to achieve a market rather than monopoly for health care insurance. An opportunity for business to compete and provide better services at more affordable, reasonable costs (health care exchange). It will also offer small businesses with affordable health care plans options. This will encourage people to continue to work and lead a fulfilling life while getting their basic health care needs met.
I think Robert hit the nail on the head when he discussed the discrimination of the "uninsurable". It is unbelievable how some states can "cherry pick" who they will insure and who they will not based on illnesses and pre-existing conditions that are beyond human control. Then they set their premiums (aka- monthly dues) based on their discretion!!! What a deal for the wealthy insurance companies!! It is absolutely scandalous.
I am so proud our country has taken a stand to make pivotal change. Opponents to the bills throw in my face that it is people like myself that will be paying more in work taxes to cover my "cadillac plans" or the very wealthy (making over $200-250K- like they can't afford to pay more!). I say- bring it on. Health care is not a privilege it is a right. If I have to pay more taxes to even the playing field for the people that work just as hard as me but don't have employers offering the benefits. I will gladly give.
In life.... you never know what shoes you may end up walk in... or as Robert once pointed out to me- "rolling in".
A very timely article indeed. But it looks like only time will tell if any real healthcare reform is going to take place, either now or in fifty years.
